Yahoo! SB

Remember the 90s? You know Yahoo for their email, their search engine and chat rooms. But did you know they’re also web hosts? They have a few small plans geared towards individuals and small businesses. These are some solid plans, with unlimited storage and databases and WordPress compatibility.

Thumbs Up

  • Free domain
  • 99.99% uptime is a perk
  • Their interface is easy to use
  • Comes with sitebuilding tools

Thumbs Down

  • Their long-term pricing isn’t totally transparent
  • Lacks scalability
  • Only shared servers
  • Better sitebuilding on Yahoo websites

User experience

Yahoo Small Business plans come with pretty solid site-building tools, a user-friendly interface WordPress integration and decent customer service. Their helpful customer service is available 24/7 via ticket, and phone service is available from 6AM - 6PM PST. This is a bit less than competitors, and in fact some customer service is only accessible for users on the Advanced or Premier plans. There’s also a database on their website with answers to FAQs.

Pricing

Their cheapest plan starts at $4.49/month when you buy an annual plan upfront. You also have the option of paying monthly or every 3 or 5 years (although the website only displays the annual payment options - you’ll have to begin the purchase process to see other options). Yahoo’s plans all include a free domain, as long as you’ve committed to an annual plan (or longer).

-Basic Plan - Starting at $4.49/month with annual billing, you’ll get 100GB disk space, 1,000GB/month data transfers and 10 sites pages.

-Advanced Plan - For $5.89/month when billed annually, you’ll get unlimited site pages, 500GB storage and 5,000GB transfers each month. This is geared more towards businesses.

-Premier Plan - Pay $6.79/month with annual billing to get unlimited storage, data transfer and private registration.

Yahoo Small Business offers a typical 30-day money-back guarantee in case you’d like to cancel the service.

Characteristics & Tools

Yahoo Small Business hosting plans don’t include cloud, VPS, dedicated or reseller hosting. It’s just got a couple of shared hosting plans, intended for low-traffic, lower-capacity sites.

All plans include SSL certificates for website encryption and domain names. Yahoo Small Business boasts a 99.99% uptime, so your site is guaranteed to almost always be online.

If you need eCommerce options, there are 3 additional packages: Starter, Standard and Professional. In addition to the features offered in the traditional shared hosting plans, you’ll get UPS shipping integration, payment processing through credit cards and PayPal and unlimited storage and data transfers.

Overall

Consider Yahoo Web Hosting if you’re an individual or small business in the market for a simple, no frills interface. It’s got a great uptime, intuitive tools for sitebuilding and security features, but on the other hand it’s pretty limited in terms of packages offered. It’s not the most scalable service, so users with high-traffic websites might do best looking elsewhere.
